Ageing Jays by wing primary covert patterns

These Jays were ringed at Sharow Grange, Ripon in March. The covert patterns show a distinctive difference between immature and adult Jays. Take a look below.

The first three pictures from the left are of immature birds. The outer right wing is that of an adult bird. Note the difference in the barring and colour of the adult bird coverts in comparison with that of the immature birds.
