Recent recoveries, a first for EDRG, long lived birds and a long distance traveller!

Below are other birds ringed by the group and recently controlled, seen or found

Avocet Yellow DV

This photo was taken by Stuart Darbyshire at RSPB Marshside, Southport on Saturday 24th March 2018, Yellow DV was ringed on 28 June 2016 between Nosterfield NR and Nosterfield Quarry.  Seen at Alkborough Flats in August 2016 but no further sightings until last weekend!

Black Headed Gull ET53375

First ringed as a pulli at Upper Barden Reservoir on the 20 June 1999, this long-lived BHG was seen at Marine Lake, Southport, Merseyside, UK on the 19 March 2018, 79km WSW from it’s original site but almost 19 years later!

Sedge Warbler Z025975

Ringed at Eshton Tarn on the 28 May 2016 as an adult male, this Sedge Warbler was controlled in Tour aux Moutons, Donges, Loire-Atlantique, France on the 21 August 2017.  This is 743km south of it’s original ringing site. Obviously hasn’t heard of Brexit yet!

Ringed at Eshton Tarn, North Yorkshire on the 17 August 2015, this bird was re-trapped on the 6 March 2017 by the Borders RG at Peebles, having travelled NNW for 196km


Goldcrest 4Y5213

This is the Group’s first-ever Goldcrest retrap and was retrapped at the prestigious Treswell Wood, Nottinghamshire, where so much that we know about passerines in the UK has come from. This bird was ringed at Harlow Carr Gardens, Harrogate on the 29 October 2017 and re-trapped a short while later on the 12 November 2017 having travelled 90km SSE.


Starling CR20169

This bird was ringed on the 9 February 2008 as an adult male in Sharow, near Ripon and was recovered, having been found freshly dead from hitting a window, again in Sharow on the 10 November 2017. The bird may not have travelled long distances,  as far as we know, but it had a long life having lived for over 10 years!


Redwing RF83695

This bird was originally ringed by the Merseyside RG on the 17 October 2015 at Woolston Eyes, Warrington and controlled on the 20 October 2017 at Ripon Parks having travelled NE for 110km.
