EDRG Swifts

IMG_2520

Swifts have been ringed by EDRG since 2005 with dedicated nest boxes, complete with nest cameras to monitor what is happening inside the box situated at a site just south of Ripon, North Yorkshire.

The picture above is of swiflet triplets, a first for the EDRG nest boxes as the usual brood size is one or two.

Adult female, with ring number SE94935, was ringed on 1 July 2014 and retrapped at the same site on 7 July 2017 and 13 July 2018.

There is also an app for mobiles called Swift Mapper. The purpose of the Swift Mapper smartphone app is to record the location of swifts and swift nest sites around the UK. This information can then be used to monitor distribution and population changes.  The data can also be used by local authority planners, architects, ecologists and developers to find out where swift “hotspots” are. It is hoped that this information will assist with providing suitable mitigation to protect breeding swifts during building development and renovations. This data will play an important role in reversing the decline of this charismatic migrant bird.  Click on the following link for more information: This app is only available on the App Store for iOS devices.
