Significant Goldcrest recovery

Of the 728 Goldcrest ringed so far by EDRG, Goldcrest CLJ133 ringed on the 22 October 2016 at Ripon Parks is only the second record of a recovery for the group. The first was back in 2008. CLJ133, a juvenile male, had travelled significantly further than the previous record being found in Hexham, Northumberland on the 12 May 2017, some 97km (60 miles) away. The question is whether the bird was on its way to breeding grounds in the Scottish Borders or travelling further afield to destinations in Scandinavia.

Avocet sighting

Good news for EDRG in that one of the three Avocet colour ringed birds ringed between Nosterfield NR and Lingam Lake ahs been seen again in Kent. The same bird was seen twice in the week and the 12th and 15th April 2017. IT had travelled a distance of 335km (208 miles). Will Avocet EW28898 remain in Kent or come further north to breed? Below is the bird in question, Colour Marks, Left above knee, Lime, Blue: Right above knee Orange, Orange. The bird was ringed on the 28 June 2016. Click on the following link for more information. RHS Gardens Harlow Carr Ringing Demonstration

Though it wasn’t the best of days for a ringing demonstration, the twice annual visit to the RHS Gardens Harlow Carr by EDRG was a great success with many interested and observant members of the public watching our dedicated team of ringers ring a good number of birds throughout the day.

For more information about the day at Harlow Carr and about our new record of over 1000 birds being ringed at Harlow Carr since ringing started there in 2009, click on the link. Ringing Demonstrations

Original Witherby ring given to EDRG

An original Witherby ring has been given to EDRG by someone who used to ring in the late 1950’s and early 60’s. This remarkable ring, number E9406, is made of quite a soft metal. A great artefact to have.
